Man the first weekend of the CWS annoyed the hell out of me. It was a piss poor production all around.
North Carolina beat Oregon State in a 4 hour, 25 minute game full of walks, pitching changes, slow work, HBPs, and 4 errors on OSU. They announced the record-breaking length of game at the end with some sort of pride - it broke the USC/Arizona State game that went 21-14 in the finals in 1998 - and we booed. It was 95 degrees. I went through 7 bottles of water.
The Saturday night game is the marquee game in terms of attendance. So, running late, they scrambled to start Washington/Miss State with an empty outfield. People crawled through the gates as both pitchers were dealing. Die hard fans like me and my friends didn't get in until the end of 5th inning. A great game ended 1-0 on a MSU walk off double to right field.
UT/Arkansas today was a disaster unlike anything I've seen in sports in person. It rained for 15 minutes at the stadium, maybe. It rained hard; the tarp was warranted. After 95 degree heat the past two days, it felt delightful. Then the one storm moved through, and everybody assumed we were ready to play again, with Arkansas up 5-2 and Texas facing a crucial spot with the bases loaded.
Instead whoever was in charge decided to delay the game for an absurd 2 hours and 45 minutes. Any semblance of lightning was gone after 45 minutes, and after 2 hours, the field crew had nothing to get the game started. Then they threw 20 extra minutes on to the delay just for the hell of it. The game itself ended up being 4 hours and 5 minutes, and with 15 minutes of rain thrown in, the game took 6 hours and 50 minutes to complete. Arkansas, who has traveled here as well as any team in recent memory, finished the game 11-5 after blowing the game open in the rain delay inning. Texas had to scratch the new pitcher and ended up going with 5 pitchers in that inning.
They also threw in a tribute to Augie Garrido somewhere in there. We cheered, Gary, I promise, after years of picking on him. May he rest peacefully.
The marquee matchup of the weekend perhaps, Tech vs Florida, started at 9 PM central. I was tired and angry and had sat in the hot sun again, so I came home because I have to work in the morning. I'm for weather safety, but what happened today was just insane.
